How to Change DNS on Chromecast

Change DNS settings on your Google Chromecast using the Google Home app. Takes about three minutes.

Why Change DNS on Chromecast

Chromecast is a simple device. It does not have a user interface or settings menu. You control it from your phone. That simplicity is great for streaming, but it makes changing DNS less obvious than on other devices.

Chromecast uses the DNS from your router by default. If your ISP DNS is slow, your Chromecast will struggle with buffering and slow loading times on Netflix, YouTube, and other streaming apps. Fast DNS makes a real difference for streaming because video requires constant DNS resolution for ads, CDN nodes, and analytics.

Unlike the Fire Stick or Apple TV, Chromecast does not let you set DNS on the device itself for the original Chromecast models. You need to change it at the router level or use the Google Home app for Chromecast with Google TV.

Before You Start

Check which Chromecast model you have. The original Chromecast (without remote) requires router-level DNS changes. Chromecast with Google TV lets you change DNS in the Google Home app.

Best DNS choices for Chromecast:

  • Cloudflare1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1. Fast, no logging.
  • Google8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Reliable.
  • Quad99.9.9.9 and 149.112.112.112. Blocks malicious domains.

Step-by-Step: Change DNS on Chromecast

For Chromecast with Google TV:

  1. Open the Google Home app on your phone.
  2. Tap your Chromecast device.
  3. Tap the Settings gear icon.
  4. Under Network, tap your Wi-Fi network name.
  5. Tap DNS and select Manual.
  6. Enter your Primary DNS and Secondary DNS.
  7. Tap Save.

For original Chromecast (no remote):

You cannot change DNS directly on the original Chromecast. You must change DNS at the router level. See our router DNS guide for instructions. Once you change DNS on the router, every device on your network uses it, including the Chromecast.

Best DNS Servers for Chromecast

Provider Primary / Secondary Why Use It

Verify Your DNS Settings

In the Google Home app, go to your Chromecast settings and check the Network section. It should show your manual DNS addresses. Cast a video to test streaming performance.
