What Is Google Cloud DNS

Google Cloud DNS is a managed authoritative DNS hosting service that is part of the Google Cloud Platform (GCP). It allows organizations to publish and manage DNS zones using Google's globally distributed anycast network. Cloud DNS translates domain names into IP addresses for applications and services running on Google Cloud or any other infrastructure.

Unlike Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8), which is a recursive resolver for end users, Google Cloud DNS is an authoritative DNS service for domain owners. You use it to host the DNS records for your domain so that when users query your domain, they receive the correct IP addresses for your servers.

Cloud DNS leverages the same infrastructure that powers Google's own services, including Search, Gmail, and YouTube. This means queries to domains hosted on Cloud DNS benefit from Google's extensive anycast network and deep peering relationships with ISPs worldwide.

Pricing Model

Google Cloud DNS charges based on the number of managed zones and the volume of DNS queries. Pricing starts at $0.20 per zone per month for public zones, plus $0.40 per million queries. There is a free tier of one public zone and a limited number of queries per month. This is competitive with AWS Route 53 and generally lower than Azure DNS for high-volume deployments.

Setup Guide

To use Google Cloud DNS, create a public zone in the Google Cloud Console, add your DNS records (A, CNAME, MX, etc.), and delegate your domain by updating your registrar's name servers to the Google Cloud DNS name servers displayed in the zone details. Propagation typically completes within minutes.
