What Is Packet Loss
Packet loss happens when data packets fail to reach their destination. A small amount is normal (under 0.5%). Above 1% causes noticeable problems. Above 5% makes most online activities difficult. Packet loss causes lag, rubber-banding in games, audio cutting out in calls, and video buffering.
Causes of Packet Loss
Wi-Fi interference is the most common cause. Overloaded network equipment. Faulty cables. ISP network congestion. Outdated router firmware. Bad Ethernet ports. Too many devices on the network. Background downloads saturating your connection.
Fixing Packet Loss
Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. Replace damaged cables. Update router firmware. Reduce network congestion. Enable QoS. Call your ISP if the problem is outside your network. Use our DNS speed test to check if DNS contributes to the issue.
